Sustainable Water Use

Policy and Basic Concept

As a global healthcare company, the ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵlogo Group has established the ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵlogo Network Companies (ENW) Environmental Policy and conducts business activities with an emphasis on global environmental protection. The policy states: “5. Contribute to the formation of a recycling-oriented society by promoting the sustainable use of resources, including water, along with waste reduction and recycling”. In line with this policy, we promote effective use of water resources and water quality conservation, which are indispensable for pharmaceutical research and production activities, on a global scale.

Targets, Issues and Actions

To promote efficient use of water resources, we have set a medium-term goal to reduce water withdrawal intensity by 7% by FY2030 compared to FY2023. This is measured using the indicator: water withdrawal (thousand m³) / (cost of sales excluding royalty payments + R&D expenses + SG&A expenses [JPY 100 million]). To achieve this, we are promoting efficient water use across the company, including initiatives such as recycling laboratory wastewater and rainwater.

In addition, we comply with environmental standards for wastewater management in all countries where we operate, including environmental laws, regulations, and agreements with local governments, and have established voluntary standards that are stricter than legal requirements. Our medium-term goal is to maintain zero legal violations through FY2030, and we continue to uphold high-quality wastewater treatment that contributes to water quality conservation throughout the company.

Structures and Systems

The ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵlogo Group has established an environmental management system to promote global activities and is working to strengthen activities to identify environmental risks and establish countermeasures in Japan and overseas.

Initiatives

To promote efficient use of water resources, we have set a medium-term goal to reduce water withdrawal intensity by 7% by FY2030 compared to FY2023. This is measured using the indicator: water withdrawal (thousand m³) / (cost of sales excluding royalty payments + R&D expenses + SG&A expenses [JPY 100 million]). To achieve this, we are promoting efficient water use across the company.
We also comply with applicable environmental standards related to wastewater discharge in each country where we operate. We have set a medium-term goal of maintaining zero violations through FY2030 and continue to maintain high-quality wastewater treatment that contributes to water quality conservation across the Group. Furthermore, we are encouraging our suppliers to set goals and promote initiatives for “Sustainable water use” through briefings and engagement activities.
With regard to investments, the ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵlogo Group has established Internal Water Pricing (IWP) for each country where its major plants and research laboratories are located. Under this approach, reductions in water use are converted into monetary value and incorporated into investment decision criteria as an investment benefit.

Regarding water withdrawals in water-stressed regions, a survey of plants and research laboratories to assess their potential impacts based on the medium-term outlook for business activities did not identify any areas posing a high risk to business operations.

Data

Since FY2023, we have been gradually expanding the scope of sites covered by water-related data collection. The number of sites included increased from 21 global sites in FY2023 to 67 sites, including overseas sales offices, in FY2024, and further expanded to 71 sites in FY2025.

Regarding progress toward our FY2030 water withdrawal intensity target, although the scope of data collection was expanded by four additional sites compared with the previous fiscal year, the FY2025 result was 0.122, below the FY2025 target of 0.140. Total water withdrawal amounted to 3,146 thousand m³, representing an approximately 1% decrease year-on-year across the Group. While water withdrawal increased at the Exton Site (U.S.) due to higher production activity, it decreased at the Suzhou Plant (China) following the shutdown of boiler operations in February 2025 and the transition to steam supplied via a municipal pipeline system. In addition, water withdrawal decreased at the Tsukuba Research Laboratories (Ibaraki Prefecture) due to repairs to boiler-related equipment, which reduced the consumption of municipal water.

Each site is promoting the efficient use of water resources and water recycling. For example, at the Tsukuba Research Laboratories, wastewater generated from pharmaceutical research and development activities is treated at an on-site treatment facility and reused for facility maintenance purposes, including air-conditioning systems. In addition, at the Exton Site, following an upgrade of the Water for Injection (WFI) recovery system, recovered water is reused as cooling tower make-up water.

Approximately 76% of the Group’s total water withdrawal is groundwater withdrawn at the Kawashima Plant. A large portion of this water is discharged into nearby rivers to maintain river flow at the request of local authorities.

Wastewater discharge totaled 2,321 thousand m³, a decrease of approximately 5% from the previous fiscal year. The primary reason for this decrease was a reduction in wastewater discharge at the Kawashima Plant. At this facility, groundwater and other water sources are discharged into rivers via a Japanese garden pond on site. In FY2025, wastewater discharge was lower than in the previous fiscal year due in part to a decrease in rainwater inflow.

As business activities are expected to continue expanding, we will further promote the efficient use of water resources and water recycling and will continue working toward the effective and sustainable use of water resources.
